FAQ's - Red Dilemmas

REDS FADE BETWEEN RETOUCHES

Client’s Level 4-Light Brown haircolor has a Red-Orange (RO) base, which fades slightly and loses vibrancy in between retouch appointments.

Color refresh and add shine with Radiance Translucent Deposit-Only Color. It’s a perfect choice to rejuvenate and brighten previously colored hair. Here’s how:

  1. Choose a Radiance shade with the same Level and tone as the client’s current permanent red haircolor formula. When formulating for porous hair, add 1/2-1 oz. Radiance Clear Shine to the formula.
  2. In a plastic applicator bottle mix:
    • 2 oz. Radiance
    • 2 oz. Radiance Color Infuser
  3. Apply Radiance formula to shampooed, towel-dried hair in a quick roots-to-ends method of application.
  4. Process 5 minutes at room temperature. Strand test frequently for accurate timing and predictable haircolor results.
  5. After processing is complete, rinse until the water runs clear. It is not necessary to shampoo Radiance from the hair

RED HAIR RESULTS IN PINK TONE

Red haircolor results in a pink tone.

As your client’s hair has turned gray, her red haircolor formula has created pink tones. Miss Clairol GrayBusters (80 Series) has a neutral base which delivers maximum gray coverage and maximum wearability.

Here’s how to keep a red haircolor true-to-tone on graying hair:

  1. Mix 1/2-1 oz. of a GrayBusters shade with the same Level as your Miss Clairol red shade. For Example:
    • 1 oz. Miss Clairol 44R-Coppertone (Level 5)
    • 1 oz. Miss Clairol GrayBusters 85N-Lightest Neutral Brown (Level 5)
    • 2 oz. 20-volume Developer
  2. Apply using a virgin or retouch method of application. Process for 30-45 minutes. Rinse, shampoo and condition.

NATURAL STRAWBERRY BLONDE LACKS VIBRANCY AND TONE

Client’s natural strawberry blonde hair, Level 10-Lightest Blonde, lacks vibrancy and tone. She wants a brighter red-copper tone and more shine.

Enhance the client’s haircolor or color refresh with a product like Complements Long-Lasting Semi-Permanent True Tone Gel Color. Try 10RC-Lightest Red-Copper Blonde. Here’s how:

  1. Mix in a plastic applicator bottle:
    • 2 oz. Complements 10RC-S
    • 2 oz. Complements Color Prompter
  2. Apply the formula to dry hair in quick roots-to-ends method of application.
  3. Process 15 minutes.
  4. Rinse, shampoo, condition and style.

RED SHADE TOO ORANGE OR BRIGHT

After rinsing the red color off, it is bright orange. The client asked to have her red color a little brighter.

Your client either had too much gray or was too blonde to support an intense shade. To neutralize the orange, choose a Blue-Violet base color in the same Level as the formula you used.

  1. Mix 2 oz. of Complements Long-Lasting Semi-Permanent True Tone Gel Color with 2 oz. of Complements Color Prompter.
  2. Apply quickly to bright areas.
  3. Check frequently until color is neutralized.

RED HAIRCOLOR NOT INTENSE

Red haircolor is not intense enough. The client’s natural color is a dark brown and she can’t see the new red haircolor.

Pre-lighten selected strands of hair to an orange color and then reapply the chosen red formula.

On your next "naturally brown but wants to be red" client, try using a higher volume of developer on the shaft (30 volume) and mix it with Miss Clairol Real Reds. Stay with 20 volume on the scalp to avoid "hot roots".

RED SHADE IS PURPLE/PINK ON VERY LIGHT/WHITE HAIR

A red haircolor went purple/pink after it was rinsed. The client has a high percentage of gray and wants a vibrant red result.

There was not enough pigmented hair to support the intense red tone.

  1. Apply a gold-based color in the same or slightly deeper Level to neutralize.
  2. Mix 2 oz. gold-based haircolor shade with 2 oz. of 10 volume of developer.
  3. Apply to purple areas and check frequently until purple has been neutralized.

Next time, add 1/2 to 1 oz. of a gold or neutral shade to your formula to prevent off-tones.
